What is the Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is an area of a woman’s body that is often affected by pregnancy and childbearing.

The pelvic floor is made up of a series of muscles, connective tissues, nerves, tendons and ligaments that provide support to our organs, including the bladder, uterus and colon. Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) can result from weakened muscles that are stretched during pregnancy and childbirth.

PFDs may include:

• Urinary/fecal incontinence
• Pelvic organ prolapse of the bladder, uterus and/or colon
• Sacroiliac or pubic symphysis malalignment
• Diastasis recti

As part of our postpartum physical therapy program, Hamot Women’s Hospital is proud to offer treatment options specifically designed for women.  Physical therapist Cheryl Curtis, MPT, is certified in biofeedback for pelvic muscle dysfunction through the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America.

Our therapists can help restore movement, function and comfort to women:

• Suffering from pelvic pain and/or incontinence
• After abdominal surgery, pelvic/bladder surgery, post-episiotomy and/or c-section
• During the prenatal or postpartum period

We treat patients both in the hospital and in an outpatient setting after they have been discharged.
