Pelvic Floor Disorders

Pregnancy and childbirth are two of the most natural encounters a woman’s body undergoes during her lifetime. During this period, a woman experiences tremendous hormonal and physical changes, which can sometimes lead to discomfort and musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Some more common musculoskeletal prenatal and postpartum issues include:

• Lower back pain
• Pelvic pain
• Incision pain
• Incontinence
• Pelvic organ prolapse
• Ligament laxity creating joint and muscular discomfort
• Postural changes affecting balance and comfort

While it is estimated that most women experience some level of physical discomfort during pregnancy, it’s nice to know you do not have to suffer through all of these new aches and pains.

UPMC Hamot Women’s Hospital offers a physical therapy program that is geared specifically to pregnant women and to women who have just given birth.  Our on-site therapists provide individualized treatment and education to help women manage their symptoms throughout their pregnancy and during the postpartum period.
