Breast Health

The UPMC Hamot Imaging Center at Sterling Square, as well as the UPMC Hamot for Breast Health Office, offers screening, diagnostic analog and digital mammography, breast ultrasound, bone density screening, health education, and wellness resources.  Our experienced and caring staff includes board-certified radiologists and ultrasound technicians, friendly office assistants, and certified breast health nurse navigators.  This team provides education, compassionate support, and care coordination for patients with breast disease throughout UPMC Hamot and the community.

Digital Mammography

UPMC Hamot is proud to bring you the only full network of digital mammography in the region. Some of the advantages of digital mammography include:

• Greater accuracy. For women age 50 or younger, digital mammograms are especially effective in detecting changes in dense breast tissue.
• Faster imaging and readings. Screening mammograms usually take a quick 15 minutes. And in most cases, results are ready within just 24 to 48 hours.
• Continuity of care. Sharing digital imagery among doctors is easier than ever.

Breast Health Navigators

UPMC Hamot's breast health navigators are specifically trained in breast health care.  Educated in understanding the types of breast disease, including cancer, signs and symptoms, early detection techniques, and treatments, the navigators help patients and families to steer through the maze of care providers, patient support organizations, and related components of the health care system.

The breast health navigation program provides education and emotional support for patients and family members and acts as a liaison between the patient and treatment.  With guidance from the breast health navigators, patients can count on the timely delivery of diagnostics, treatment, and follow-up services, key components to successful recovery.  Specific duties include:

• Serving as an educator while supporting the patient and family in coping with the psychological aspects of breast cancer.

• Coordinating appointments with providers for the timely delivery of diagnostic and therapeutic services.

• Facilitating communications between patients and providers.

• Providing educational resources to patients and their families.

• Supports the breast cancer patient and her family in understanding and coping with the strong emotions that accompany a breast cancer diagnosis.

There is no charge for the breast health navigator services.  Their only goal is to help ensure truly seamless care and to provide support for patients and families.  To schedule an appointment, please dial 814-877-5395.  Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What do I need to know before scheduling my mammogram?

• Schedule mammograms seven to 10 days after menstruation begins.
• Bring your previous mammogram films, or request that they be sent to the imaging location of your choice, so they can be compared to the new ones.
